Version 2.0
1. About this policy
This Cookie Policy explains how Packlyn Canada ("Packlyn", "we" or "us") uses cookies and similar storage in Packlyn Design Software. It covers:
- the desktop app for Windows and macOS
- the online version, which runs in a web browser at https://accounts.packlyn.ca/app/ and uses the same account, designs and plans as the desktop app
- the Packlyn account service's web pages, such as sign-in links, Packlyn's payment page and the administrator panel used by Packlyn staff
This policy does not cover our website, https://packlyn.ca. The website has its own cookie banner and its own Privacy & Cookie Policy at https://packlyn.ca/privacy/, which explain the cookies the website uses.
Please read this policy together with our Privacy Policy.
2. The short version
- The desktop app does not use cookies to track you.
- The online version and the account service's web pages use one strictly necessary cookie, pd_session, and only when you sign in on the web.
- We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and there are no third-party trackers in the desktop app, the online version or the account service.
- The desktop app keeps your settings, your designs and your sign-in token on your computer.
- The online version keeps your designs and settings in your browser's own storage on that device, so your work isn't lost if a tab closes.
3. What cookies and local storage are
A cookie is a small piece of text that a website asks your web browser to store, so the site can recognize your browser on later visits. Some cookies are essential, for example to keep you signed in. Others are used for purposes such as analytics or advertising.
Web browsers also let a site keep information on your device in the browser's own storage, such as IndexedDB and local storage. Unlike cookies, this information is not sent to the site with each request.
A desktop app works differently from a website. Instead of relying on cookies, it saves information in files on your computer.
In this policy, we call browser storage and the app's files "local storage".
4. The desktop app
No tracking cookies
Packlyn Design Software does not use cookies to track you, and it contains no advertising or analytics trackers. The app does not send us usage statistics.
What the app keeps on your computer
- Settings: the app keeps your settings on your computer, so it works the way you left it.
- Sign-in token: when you sign in, the app keeps a sign-in token on your computer so it can connect to your account. If you choose "Remember me", the token is encrypted using your operating system's keychain. Sessions are tied to the computer they were made on.
- Your designs: the designs you make are stored on your computer. With Pro, when you are signed in, they are also saved to your account. In guest mode, designs are deleted when you close the app.
This information is used to make the app work for you. It is not shared with advertisers or used to follow you across other apps or websites.
Your controls in the app
- Choose whether to use "Remember me" when you sign in.
- Sign out at any time to end your session on that computer.
- Delete designs stored on your computer whenever you like.
- Uninstall the app using your operating system's usual steps.
5. The online version
The online version uses the pd_session cookie described in section 6 while you are signed in. It also keeps the following in your browser's local storage on that device:
- Your designs: the designs you make there, the pictures you add to them, their earlier versions, your folders and the quote requests you sent from that browser. With Pro, when you are signed in, your designs are also saved to your account. If the browser can't store them, they are kept only until you close the tab.
- Settings: your settings for the online version, and the province or territory you chose for a sales tax estimate.
- Template previews: preview pictures of templates, so they open faster next time.
This information stays in your browser. It is used only to make the online version work for you and is not used to follow you across other websites.
Your controls in the online version
- Sign out at any time to end your session in that browser.
- Delete designs in the online version whenever you like.
- Clear your browser's data for accounts.packlyn.ca to remove everything the online version keeps on that device. Designs that were not yet saved to your account are then lost.
6. The session cookie
The online version and the account service's web pages use one cookie, which is strictly necessary:
- Name: pd_session
- Purpose: keeps you signed in, so the account service knows the requests come from you
- When it is set: only when you sign in on the web, in the online version or on the account service's web pages
- How long it lasts: no longer than your signed-in session (12 hours, or up to 30 days if you choose "Remember me"), and it is cleared when you sign out; a session that isn't used for 14 days stops working
- Protections: HttpOnly (scripts on the page can't read it), Secure (sent only over encrypted HTTPS connections) and SameSite=Strict (not sent with requests that start on other websites, which helps protect against cross-site attacks)
Every change you make while signed in on the web also carries a separate security token that the page keeps only in memory, not in a cookie.
We do not use any other cookies in the online version or on the account service's web pages.
Packlyn's payment page and Square
Pro subscriptions are paid on Packlyn's payment page, where you enter your card in a secure card form provided by Square. Square may use cookies or similar technologies in its card form, for example for security and fraud prevention, under Square's own policies. Packlyn doesn't control them.
7. Analytics, advertising and third-party tracking
We do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies or any other tracking technology in the desktop app, the online version or the account service, and we do not allow third parties to track you through them.
8. How long storage lasts
- The pd_session cookie: until your web session ends or you sign out.
- The desktop app's sign-in token: until you sign out or your session ends.
- Settings: until you change them, or remove the app and its files from your computer, or clear your browser's data for the online version.
- Guest designs: deleted when you close the app.
- Designs you keep on your computer or in your browser: until you delete them, or clear your browser's data for the online version.
9. Consent
Strictly necessary cookies and storage are needed to give you the service you ask for, such as staying signed in and keeping your designs. Because they are essential, we don't ask for separate consent to use them, but we explain them in this policy.
We don't use non-essential cookies, so the app and the online version don't show a cookie banner. If we ever decide to use non-essential cookies or analytics in the app, the online version or the account service, we will update this policy first and ask for your consent before using them. We will give you a clear choice to accept or decline, without pressure or misleading design, and a way to change your choice later.
10. Your browser controls
Most web browsers let you see, block and delete cookies and site data through their settings. If you block or delete the pd_session cookie, you will be signed out of the online version and the account service's web pages, and you won't be able to sign in on the web until you allow it again. If you block site storage, the online version can't keep your designs on that device between visits. The desktop app does not depend on browser cookies.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our services or the law change. Each version has an effective date and a version number, and you can find the current version in the app under Legal and Policies. If we make a significant change, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
